Captain Who: Character Biographies

The First Captain The Second Captain The Third Captain The Fourth Captain

Mix the Doctor, as portrayed by Tom Baker with a little of Colin Baker, and a little Patrick Troughton, and you basically have the Captain. The Captain is currently in his third incarnation, and is 417 years old as of Serial 1A.

He is sarcastic, cynical, and playfully mischevious, but retains a strong sense of individuality and morality. He is resolved to being a cosmic vagabond, though he values stability within the outward appearance of purposelessness. His quirky nature is readily apparrant in his music of choice - early 1970's Country.

Although he is carefree on the surface, the Captain often uses flippancy and humor to cover up deep-seated insecurity due to believing he has been rejected by traditional Gallifreyan society.

Lisa Simpson

The third Captain's first regular companion in the series is a 9 year old girl named Lisa Simpson. She is an inquiring, precocious youngster equipped with a dry sense of humor, high ideals and a deep mistrust of authority.

She is proficient with the saxophone, and enjoys Blues music. She sees the Captain as a kindred spirit, big brother, and in some ways as a surrogate father. She feels the Captain is one of the few people who truly understands her, or at least tries to.

Despite her high intelligence and understanding of basic human nature, she remains a 9 year old girl. Her innocence and inexperience can get her into trouble, and her willingness to stand for an ideal can at times border on recklessness.

The First Chief The Second Chief

The third Captain's second regular companion in the series is a Time Lady dubbed The Chief. She is 424 years old as of Serial 1M and is currently in her second incarnation. She is fascinated by Earth's 1960's "hippie" culture and lists the Beatles as her favorite musical group. Her easygoing nature is skeptical but not cynical, and is tempered by a sense of purpose in justice.

Although she finds the carelessness of undirected wandering to be a welcome break from the tedium of the structure of everyday life on Gallifrey, she finds the lack of purpose in aimless travel for its own sake to be distasteful.
